Court subjects MP Brownbill to public humiliation

MP Chanel Brownbill arrives at Court House - 20180207 MP

PHILIPSBURG – The Court in First Instance subjected parliamentarian Chanel Brownbill to  public  humiliation in its blistering ruling on Tuesday that sentenced the defendant to 18 months of imprisonment, with 15 months suspended and 240 hours of community service.

Brownbill, owner of the sole proprietorship Country Construction, invoiced the harbor between 2009 and 2016 for more than $1.2 million, but he never submitted tax returns for income and turnover taxes. This way he defrauded the tax inspectorate of more than one million guilders, the public prosecutor alleged at the trial in March.

The court considered Brownbill case as “exceptional” and justified its sentence with a fierce comment on the defendant’s attitude during the trial.
