Parotte, Wathey and Scott share top spots in Grand Parade

Great Bay — Behind every dark cloud there is a silver lining, that was exactly what transpired before the start of the highly anticipated Grand Parade on Monday. The vibrant colors displayed by the troupes was enough cast a long line of brilliance along the route.

Some were breathtaking, some mesmerizing while some were tantalizing and it took the almost 24 hours before the announcements was made. It was evident that even the judges had a hard time arriving at a final decision.

Nathalie Parotte’s Blue E’Toile won the prize for winning troupe, the 90 member strong troupe was the true representation of color and rhythm. With back up music from the Explosion Band, their explosion of colors could not be missed as they made their presence felt.

This time, its was not just for fun, Brenda Wathey’s Rio Production made a grand return to the competitive arena after a long break and they were suitably rewarded as the winners of the ‘Best Individual piece’. Wathey also competed this year huge butterfly costume added the Midas touch to the proceedings.

Occupying the number two slot in the individual category was Erica Fortuno’s Xscape the Band, last years winner. Her 80 member strong troupe were as entertaining as they were delightful.

Randolph ‘The Scientist’ Scott has once again proved that he is the one to beat in the float category after picking up his 4th straight title with the ‘Green Scientist” Scott is known for his ability to turn his imagination into a work of art. Regardless of what he comes out with, it’s always an attention grabber.

The other troupes in the Grand Parade this year were The Survivors, Island Revelers, Empire, Tropical Carnival, Love 4 Fun and newcomers to the scene, the Amazon Workers. With just over 360 days to go, a lot can be expected as St. Maarten prepares to celebrate the 50th year of carnival.
