Withdrawal of 1986-1994 issues banknotes

NAf 250 Guilder Note

Willemstad – The Centrale Bank van Curaçao en Sint Maarten (CBCS) has, in accordance with paragraph 1 of article 7 of the Central Bank Statute for Curacao and Sint Maarten (the Bank charter), decided to withdraw from circulation all denominations of the Netherlands-Antillean guilder banknotes issued from 1986 to 1994 as per July 31, 2018.

This includes the NAf 5, NAf 10, NAf 25, NAf 50, NAf 100 and NAf 250 denominations of the native birds series without the gold-colored foil print. Consequently, banknotes with the mentioned years of issue will no longer have the legal tender status as of August 1, 2018, and may be refused as such as of this date. This implies that these banknotes can no longer be used to make cash purchases as of August 1, 2018.

The decision to withdraw banknotes with the mentioned years of issue is based on a periodic evaluation of all banknotes in circulation, which focuses mainly on the quality of these banknotes. The banknotes of the 1986 issue no longer meet our quality standards.

If you are in the possession of banknotes of the 1986-1994 issue, we urge you to exchange these at your local commercial bank or at the CBCS. From August 1, 2018, until July 31, 2048, the indicated banknotes can only be exchanged at the CBCS. In accordance with paragraph 3 of article 7 of the Central Bank Statute for Curaçao and Sint Maarten, the right to demand exchange of the banknotes concerned shall expire after July 31, 2048.
