Attorney Cor Merx preaches caution with insurance settlements

PHILIPSBURG – Don’t let your insurance company take you for a ride. That is, in popular terms, the message from attorney Cor Merx, founder of the local Consumer Association.

“I am not going to name any insurance companies,” Merx says in his office above the St. Rose Arcade in downtown Philipsburg. “But what I see is that these insurers hire adjusters from places like Jamaica and Grenada. I wonder if those people have a work permit and a residence permit. They look at your house that is insured for, say $500,000. They assess the value of the home at $700,000 and then they turn around and tell the client that he is under-insured.” What does this mean?
