St. Maarten Recognises Schools for Commitment to Safety and Emergency Preparedness
From our correspondent
Philipsburg, St. Maarten – October 23 2026 — The Student Support Services Division (SSSD), under St. Maarten’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, hosted its 2026 School Safety & Emergency Teams Awards and Appreciation Luncheon on Thursday, October 22. The event recognised participating schools for their involvement in school safety initiatives, with certificates and awards presented in acknowledgement of their contributions to creating safer learning environments.
The recognition forms part of St. Maarten’s broader efforts to strengthen emergency preparedness and response within its education system. According to the Government of St. Maarten, the SSSD coordinates the island’s school safety programme and provides support in areas including crisis management, school safety implementation and psychosocial assistance. The division also works with school personnel and other stakeholders to help ensure that students can learn in safe and supportive surroundings.
School Safety and Emergency Teams play an important role in preparing for emergencies, coordinating responses and supporting recovery efforts at their respective institutions. Government documentation indicates that publicly funded schools have established these teams and developed safety and emergency plans to guide their actions before, during and after emergencies. The annual awards and appreciation luncheon therefore provided an opportunity to acknowledge the participating schools and highlight the continued importance of preparedness, collaboration and safeguarding students across St. Maarten.
