Dominica’s Geothermal Project Earns Two Regional Awards as Henderson Receives Energy Leadership Honour
From our correspondent
Roseau, Dominica – October 19 2026 — Dominica’s push to transform its energy sector has earned regional recognition, with the country’s geothermal initiative securing two top honours at the 2026 Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum (CREF). The project was named Best Caribbean Energy Project and Best Financing Programme, while Foreign Affairs, International Business, Trade and Energy Minister Dr. Vince Henderson received the Caribbean Energy Leadership MVP Industry Award. The awards were presented during the forum in Panama City, Panama, which ran from October 14 to 16, 2026, placing the spotlight on Dominica’s efforts to expand renewable energy and contribute to the Caribbean’s transition towards cleaner power sources.
The recognition comes as the island’s 10-megawatt geothermal facility in Laudat, within the Roseau Valley, has been completed and is now delivering electricity to the national grid. The plant began commercial operations in July 2026 after undergoing the necessary testing, marking an important development in Dominica’s efforts to reduce its reliance on imported fossil fuels. The financing award highlights the funding mechanisms and partnerships that helped bring the project to completion, while Henderson’s individual honour recognises his leadership in navigating the technical, financial and operational demands associated with the initiative.

Henderson described the awards as a victory for Dominica, acknowledging the vision of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, the work of the project teams and the contributions of development partners. He said completing an undertaking of this magnitude required determination and long-term commitment, particularly for a small island developing state. The minister emphasised that attention must now turn to ensuring the project produces meaningful results for the public, including the prospect of lower electricity costs, improved conditions for businesses and new avenues for economic growth. The Government has welcomed the recognition as support for its wider goals of developing cleaner energy, strengthening national energy security and building a more resilient economy.
