Police Urge Public to Prioritise Safety During 2026 World Creole Music Festival Weekend
From our correspondent
Roseau, Dominica – October 23 2026 — The Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force is urging residents, visitors and business operators to take extra precautions as the island prepares for the 2026 World Creole Music Festival. Speaking on the evening of Friday, October 23, Acting Superintendent of Police and Officer in Charge of the Criminal Investigative Unit, Chaucer James, reminded the public that the busy festive period can create opportunities for criminal activity if appropriate safety measures are neglected. He said the police would continue working to maintain public order and security but emphasised that cooperation from the public would be essential to ensuring a peaceful celebration.
James advised homeowners to secure their properties before leaving for festival activities by locking all doors, windows and gates, keeping valuables out of sight, and arranging for trusted neighbours or relatives to check on their homes during extended absences. He also cautioned against sharing information online that could reveal when a property is unoccupied. Festivalgoers were encouraged to keep handbags closed and close to their bodies, safeguard mobile phones and wallets, carry only necessary cash, and remain alert to suspicious distractions in crowded areas. Those using ATMs should choose well-lit locations, avoid accepting unsolicited assistance and never disclose their personal identification numbers.
The police official also called on motorists to protect their vehicles by parking in designated, well-lit areas, locking their doors and removing valuables from view. He urged revellers to organise reliable transportation in advance, designate a sober driver if alcohol would be consumed, keep their phones charged and avoid walking alone through isolated areas late at night. James further encouraged peaceful behaviour, advising patrons to avoid confrontations, follow instructions from police officers and event security personnel, and comply with screening procedures. He also reminded licensed firearm holders that weapons would not be permitted inside the festival venue and advised them not to approach the entrance with firearms.
Special attention was drawn to the safety of children, with parents and guardians encouraged to supervise them closely, establish meeting points in case they become separated, and teach them to seek assistance from police officers or identifiable event officials. Any missing child should be reported immediately through the missing persons hotline at 1-800-4357. James also warned the public to exercise caution when purchasing festival tickets or booking accommodation, recommending the use of verified sellers and direct confirmation of reservations. Meanwhile, business owners and vendors were urged to secure their cash and merchandise, avoid accumulating large sums at their premises, inspect locks and security systems, and remain vigilant for counterfeit currency.
James called on businesses to make safe arrangements for closing their operations and transporting their earnings, while encouraging members of the public to report theft, threats, violence and other suspicious activity promptly. Anyone witnessing an incident should provide accurate information to the nearest police officer or security official and avoid confronting or pursuing suspected offenders. The Acting Superintendent reaffirmed the police force’s commitment to public safety, stressing that a successful festival weekend would require responsible decisions from everyone. He concluded by encouraging residents and visitors to remain vigilant, look out for one another and make safety a priority throughout the celebrations.
