National Police asked to stay longer

Rafael Boasman 20170809 HHPHILIPSBURG – Putting on his favorite hat of Minister of Justice, Rafael Boasman announced on Wednesday that his ministry has asked for an extension of the stay of the Dutch National Police on the island. “We expect that things could get a little rough.” the minister said, referring to the upcoming holiday season, the expected arrival of cruise ships and the fact that many people are out of a job.

“We must be able to guarantee the safety of our people and our visitors.”

The minister said that the request has been made as part of the recovery program for the police. He expects that the request will be granted.

Boasman said that the contracts for ten experienced police officers from abroad are about to be signed and that the recruitment of ten local police officers is underway.

On another note, Boasman said that the construction of a new prison will cost between $50 and $60 million.

“The only solution is a new prison,” he said. “We are now looking at drawings that were already there for a prison that meets all international standards. But we also have to look at the people that will have to work in that facility.”
