Head of the Meteorological Department, Walter Isaac, said that the primary objective of this project is to provide additional weather information daily but in particular during the Hurricane season to the island and the immediate neighboring island territories.

The Met Department can then receive more detailed information on the intensity, position, movement, direction and speed of immediate weather systems in the area.

This information is then passed down to the Emergency and Disaster Management Teams and the Council of Ministers, who then communicates decisions to the public in timelier and accurate information which hopefully results in minimized loss of life and property, in a practical economic and cost effective way.

This weather radar system will be used with the other sources of meteorological information, namely: satellite, aircraft, weather balloons, ocean buoys, and neighboring ships.

The Community of Saint-Martin, as the lead partner, is responsible for the administrative management and coordination of the project. The responsibility for technical implementing of the Project shall be the Meteorological Department of Sint Maarten and Météo-France.

Currently the process will shortly be in the bidding phase, and those interested persons can visit the website to www.marches-securises.fr to make an offer before Tuesday, November 12, 2019 – noon.

Additional funding for this Doppler weather radar is provided by the European Regional Development Funds of the INTERREG Caraïbes program.
