Green Climate Fund Approves US$44 Million Caribbean Coastal Resilience Project
From our correspondent
Roseau, Dominica – October 29 2026 — The Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) has welcomed approval from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) for a five-year initiative aimed at helping vulnerable coastal communities across the Caribbean adapt to the growing effects of climate change. Valued at approximately US$44 million, the Climate Actions for Building Resilience in Coastal Communities (CABRIC) project will benefit The Bahamas, Belize, Grenada, Jamaica and Saint Lucia by strengthening local institutions, improving access to climate financing and equipping communities to respond to climate-related risks. CCCCC Executive Director Dr. Colin Young said the programme was designed to direct grant funding towards the communities most exposed to climate impacts, with women and girls placed at the centre of its planning and intended outcomes.
A major component of CABRIC is a US$25 million grant facility dedicated to locally led adaptation, with three funding windows offering up to US$500,000 per project. Eligible initiatives will include climate-resilient farming, sustainable fisheries, mangrove rehabilitation, early warning systems, resilient health facilities and interventions addressing the social and psychological effects of climate change. Green Climate Fund Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean Kristin Lang said the initiative would bring financing and decision-making closer to vulnerable communities, support at least 118 subprojects and strengthen local organisations, with the wider programme expected to reach nearly one million people.
The project will also provide technical assistance to help community organisations design and manage adaptation initiatives, while promoting coastal policies that respond to gender-related needs. A regional Knowledge Hub and community of practice will support participating countries in sharing climate-risk information, practical experiences and lessons learned. Rochell Newbold, the GCF Alternate Board Member, National Designated Authority and Director of the Climate Change and Environmental Advisory Unit in The Bahamas, described locally driven adaptation as essential to ensuring that resources reach the people most in need. She also highlighted the importance of grant financing and the CCCCC’s regional leadership in supporting country ownership and building community resilience.
As an accredited regional Direct Access Entity of the GCF, the CCCCC will coordinate with the five beneficiary countries and their grant administrators to support implementation. Dr. Young expressed appreciation to the participating governments, the national grant administrators and the CCCCC team involved in developing the proposal, while acknowledging the Green Climate Fund’s continued support. The project is expected to combine direct investment in community-led solutions with institutional development and regional cooperation, helping participating countries strengthen their capacity to manage current and future climate threats.
