Supervisory board members to be screened, says Prime Minister

PM Leona Romeo Marlin - 28 Aug 2019

PHILIPSBURG — During last week’s press briefing on Wednesday, August 28, 2019, Prime Minister Leona Romeo-Marlin addressed the issue of the screening process at government-owned companies.

The Prime Minister explained that it is the norm that members of the management boards of government-owned companies are screened prior to them being appointed to their functions. Contrarily to this procedure, members of the supervisory boards of government-owned companies are not normally screened.

“The fact that members of the supervisory boards have access to all documents and take decisions together with management, government is of the opinion that it is necessary to have the members of the supervisory boards of government-owned companies also screened,” the Prime Minister further explained.

The Prime Minister went on to elaborate that government has instructed the national security services VDSM to change the national decree on designating positions of confidentiality and the execution of security screenings and to add the screening of members of the supervisory board of government-owned companies.

According to Prime Minister Romeo-Marlin this process is a lengthy one and government has decided for now to make changes to the mentioned national decree for the screening of the supervisory board members of the airport companies. “The draft national decree is now at the Council of Advice and hopefully this regulation can soon go into effect and the screening can take place.” the Prime Minister said as she concluded her presentation on the topic of the screening process at government-owned companies.
