PHILIPSBURG – Female students outpace male students 2:1 when it comes to request for study financing, Minister Jorien Wuite (Education) said at Wednesday’s Council of Ministers press briefing. For the 2018-2019 academic year, the government received 176 requests for study financing; 17 requests were withdrawn, leaving a total of 159 – twenty below the number of 2017. The majority of the applicants (58 percent) wants to study in the United States, Canada or the Caribbean. PHILIPSBURG – Suppliers of goods and services to government often encounter trouble getting paid because proper procurement procedures have not been followed, Finance Minister Mike Ferrier said at Wednesday’s Council of Ministers press briefing. While Ferrier urged suppliers to make sure that they worked according to established procedures, he also acknowledged that the problem is rooted within the government organization. Prime Minister Leona Marlin-Romeo later said that civil servants who do not follow procurement procedures could be held personally liable. PHILIPSBURG – The Court in First Instance postponed the trail against two former Insel Air employees for the second time on Wednesday because their pro bono attorney Safira Ibrahim is still on strike and because the defendants were not properly summoned. The trial has been rescheduled for July 22. Alonzo Alfred H., the now 51-year old former station manager of Insel Air in St. Maarten, and 28-year old ticket agent Stephanie B.B. allegedly embezzled more than $100,000 from the airline. CAYHILL — The St. Maarten Medical Center recently provided Basic Life Support training for the Royal Marines from the Netherlands. Nineteen Marines completed a one day course in Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). After the passing of hurricane Irma, the Dutch Marines have been present on the island. A recent group received their CPR training from the SMMC, in addition to further medical training provided by the Marine Combat Life Savers. The instructor-led CPR course was held at NIPA.
