Great Bay –In 2014, Ruminni Rogers, stage name ‘Young Carlix, the Protege won his first senior Calypso title with ‘Dont judge my age’ and ‘We aint ready.’ This time he was able to capture his second title with ‘The Countdown’ and ‘Above self’.

The decision came just a matter of minutes before the start of the highly anticipated Jouvert Morning Jam. But from the reaction of the Protege after the announcement, it was long overdue and he along with his supporters were pleased.

“I told my brother that tonight I would be putting on a show because all of us went through hurricane Irma and for me, it was not a competition but a show for the people. Then I realized that after my first song, people were talking about it. Now as we can all see, my second song was more powerful that is why I saved it for last,” he said.

According to ‘The Protege’ everyone did their best, but from one to eleven had to convince the panel of judges which included Clifton Wilson (head judge), Adolfus Richardson, Albric Arrindell, Dion Gumbs, Ronny Warren and Rhoda Arrindell.

Each participant stood a chance to score 30 points for topic, composition and construction. Another 30 points for melody, originality and compatibility. For rendition 20 points for diction, intonation and clarity and for presentation 20, use of stage, props, attire and showmanship.

His message was clear and the judges whose decision was final were convinced after lengthy deliberations. The 2nd runner up place went to Clement Richards, stage name Kaiso Brat, finished with 838 points. Leroy Brooks, aka King Beau Beau, occupied the 1st runner spot with 857 points and 884 points went to ‘The Protege’.

Ascending the top spot in the senior category for the second time however has not been an easy road for ‘The Protege’. In the 2016, he did not make the final cut in a competition that ended on controversy and 2017 eliminations, he was left out in the cold, literally, but now he is back and his competition will now have to go back to the drawing board in their quest to dethrone him.

Those competing for the coveted title were Andred Richardson, aka Baker Jr, Keith Carty, aka Repeater, Leroy Vlaun aka The Wizard, Jean-Louis Rey aka X-Rey, Evelyne Walters aka Ebony Empress, Victor Richardson aka Genius, Isidore York aka Mighty Dow and the outgoing King, Alberto Arrindell, aka Fish Da Mega Boss.
