PHILIPSBURG – In November Frans Richardson, leader of the united St. Maarten party said that the USp would not erect billboards in the run-up to the parliamentary elections. The work the party has put in during its nine months in office, Richardson said back then, speaks volumes.
And indeed, normally political parties can hardly wait for the day when they are allowed to erect their humongous ego-driven political billboards – the day after Nomination Day.
This year the environment remained almost eerily free of political billboards after Nomination Day, making people wonder whether there really are elections on February 26.
But on Wednesday everything changed when the USp – the party that was not going to erect billboards – posted a series of blue party flags on the Harold Jack Hill, in full sight of the St. Maarten flag former VROMI-Minister Christophe Emmanuel had erected on the Bell property.
True, flags are not the same as billboards, but so far all parties have refrained from posting any propaganda material on the public roads.
The question is now: who’s next?
