The islands of the northeast Caribbean, hard-hit by Hurricane Irma, are bracing for the impact of another ferocious Cape Verde-type hurricane, as Tropical Storm Maria, packing winds of 65 mph, headed west-northwest at 15 mph late Sunday morning.

Hurricane watches were up for all of the Lesser Antilles Islands blasted by Irma’s eyewall winds earlier this month, including Barbuda, St. Maarten/St. Martin and St. Barthelemy, and Anguilla. Hurricane watches and tropical storm watches extended southwards to encompass nearly the entire Lesser Antilles chain of islands, and a Hurricane Warning was posted for Dominica. Maria is likely to be a Category 2 or Category 3 hurricane when it passes through the Lesser Antilles Islands on Tuesday morning.

PUBLIC ANNOUNCMENT FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF SINT MAARTEN

Curfew goes in effect on Monday at 7 PM
GREAT BAY, Sint Maarten (DCOMM) – Prime Minister William Marlin together with the Emergency Operation center (EOC) makes it known as of Monday evening September 18th at 7 PM a CURFEW will go in to effect until the passing of the Hurricane Maria and a damage assessment has been completed.
 
Everyone should be off the roads at that time as the Law Enforcement Authorities will be enforcing a Zero Tolerance for anyone breaking the curfew. The general public will be informed as to when the curfew will be lifted.
 
It is mandatory that all businesses be closed at 5:00 PM to allow their employees to return home.
UPDATE: September 18th, 2017

According to Desiree Connor, Meteorologist of Eye 4 Weather, Hurricane Maria is expected to pass near or just south of the SSS Islands by late Tuesday/early Wednesday morning, however, its OUTER BANDS will affect the northeastern Caribbean (including SSS & Surrounding Islands) from Tuesday morning through Wednesday night. Maria is expected to continue strengthening during the next 48 hours (2 days), and could possibly become a major hurricane later today prior to reaching near the local region.
