PHILIPSBURG, ST. MAARTEN — Two American college students dreaming of spending New Year’s Eve in St. Barths may have unknowingly illustrated one of the biggest challenges facing travelers to the Caribbean’s most exclusive island this upcoming high season: finding an affordable and reliable way to get there.
In a recent email received by AirStMaarten, a university student from Los Angeles explained that she and her best friend had been researching ways to spend the holiday season in St. Barths. They had investigated accommodations, airline connections and alternative transportation options, hoping to make their dream vacation financially possible.
Their proposed travel dates were December 27, 2026, through January 3, 2027, among the busiest and most expensive travel periods of the year.
Their total round-trip transportation budget? Between $600 and $700 per person, including flights from Los Angeles to the Caribbean and back.
The students were searching for shared flights, individual seats on existing charters and other affordable ways to reach the island.
What made the inquiry particularly revealing was that AirStMaarten was not the only aviation provider contacted. A partner company specializing in private aviation received essentially the same inquiry, customized to its particular services.
This is hardly unusual.
According to AirStMaarten, it illustrates a familiar phenomenon in the St. Barths travel market: travelers are shopping around extensively, contacting multiple providers and trying to piece together the best possible transportation arrangements.
And for the upcoming 2026/2027 winter season, that search could become considerably more challenging.
Why Getting to St. Barths Is Becoming More Complicated

Unlike most Caribbean destinations, St. Barths does not have an international airport capable of accommodating large commercial jetliners.
Most international travelers must first arrive at a regional gateway such as St. Maarten, San Juan, Antigua or Guadeloupe before continuing to St. Barths aboard smaller aircraft or by sea.
Princess Juliana International Airport in St. Maarten remains one of the principal gateways.
The flight between SXM and SBH normally takes approximately 15 to 25 minutes, depending on the aircraft and operating conditions. However, the short flying time disguises a much more complicated operational environment.
St. Barths’ Gustaf III Airport has a short runway, restricted operating hours, limited parking facilities and challenging terrain.
These characteristics have always made airport capacity a concern, especially during the winter high season.
Now a more formal scheduling process is adding another dimension to how operators must plan their flights.
Enter COHOR: A New Reality for St. Barths Aviation
COHOR, the French organization responsible for airport coordination and schedule facilitation, is overseeing the scheduling arrangements at St. Barths Airport.
During the 2025/2026 winter season, schedule facilitation arrangements were introduced as airport authorities sought to manage congestion and limited infrastructure.
For the 2026/2027 winter season, beginning October 25, 2026, the airport is operating under its published IATA Level 2 schedule facilitation framework.
Under the arrangements, operators submit proposed arrival and departure times, and COHOR makes scheduling recommendations based on available airport capacity.
The official winter parameters allow up to 10 aircraft parking stands and two helicopter stands during the principal daytime operating period, although actual availability may vary. Changes to initially requested operating times must also be reported.
For charter operators, this introduces additional planning and coordination requirements.
For passengers, it means that requesting a private charter does not automatically guarantee that the preferred operating time can be accommodated.
AirStMaarten expects this to be particularly challenging during peak holiday periods when commercial airlines, private charter operators and business aviation are all competing for limited airport infrastructure.
The objective of COHOR’s involvement is to improve the orderly management of airport traffic and protect operational safety. Nevertheless, AirStMaarten believes the practical consequences will require travelers to adjust their booking habits.
The days of assuming that a last-minute charter can simply be arranged at any preferred time may be coming to an end.

AirSXM’s Number One Advice: Book Early!
For more than two decades, AirStMaarten has arranged private and shared charter transportation between St. Maarten and St. Barths.
Based on that experience, the company has one overriding recommendation for travelers planning to visit St. Barths during the upcoming high season:
Book early. Secure your preferred flight arrangements as far in advance as possible.
This applies particularly to visitors traveling during Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, Presidents’ Day and other major holiday periods.
Travelers who wait until their international flights, accommodations and other arrangements have been finalized may discover that their preferred connecting flight is no longer available.
For clients who already know their intended travel dates but have not yet finalized their complete itinerary, AirSXM recommends beginning the charter booking process anyway.
Knowing the intended date, approximate arrival time, number of passengers and direction of travel allows the company to explore suitable options before demand intensifies.
AirSXM Plans to Secure Up to 160 Charter Flights
Rather than simply advising clients to book earlier, AirSXM is preparing its own response to anticipated demand.
The company plans to pre-purchase up to 160 charter slots for the SXM–SBH and SBH–SXM routes during the 2026/2027 high season.
The strategy is based on historical booking patterns and the periods during which clients have most frequently requested private charter transportation.
By securing a pool of charter capacity in advance, AirSXM intends to offer clients greater access to flight options during periods when availability may otherwise become increasingly difficult.
Prepaid charter flight credits are being offered from $2,400 to $2,800 USD per sector, subject to availability, applicable fees and booking conditions.
The advance purchase strategy does not eliminate the need for airport schedule facilitation or guarantee every requested operating time. However, it gives AirSXM a structured inventory from which to serve clients.
What If Your Travel Plans Change?
One of the biggest reasons travelers hesitate to book early is uncertainty.
International flights can be delayed or rescheduled. Villa availability may change. Private jet itineraries are adjusted. Family circumstances can force travelers to modify their plans.
AirSXM believes its charter slots strategy can provide a valuable degree of flexibility.
For example, a client may reserve a charter flight for December 27 but subsequently discover that the international flight will arrive a day later.
Instead of automatically losing the entire value of the original booking, AirSXM may be able to offer that original flight opportunity to another client and arrange an alternative flight from its available inventory.
Where the original flight can be successfully reallocated, the unused value may remain on the client’s account as a credit toward a future eligible charter flight.
Payments remain non-refundable, and any changes or credits are subject to availability, applicable fare differences and AirSXM‘s booking conditions.
Book early. Secure capacity. And if plans change, let AirSXM help find Plan B.
When Flying Becomes Difficult, Consider Going by Sea
AirStMaarten believes the new aviation scheduling environment could also accelerate interest in another transportation option that many travelers overlook: traveling to St. Barths by sea.
Through SeaSXM.com, the company arranges private speedboat transfers and other marine transportation services between St. Maarten and St. Barths.
For travelers who cannot obtain a suitable flight, particularly those booking at the last minute, private speedboat transfers can provide an attractive alternative.
Unlike aircraft operations at SBH Airport, marine transfers are not subject to the airport’s COHOR flight scheduling process.
Private speedboat transfers offer additional advantages, including flexible departure arrangements, transportation for groups and families, and the possibility of avoiding certain airport-related scheduling constraints.
Depending on the vessel, sea conditions, departure point and destination, transfers can take approximately 45 minutes or longer.
SeaSXM currently offers private speedboat arrangements, including a 12-passenger Donzi, with charter pricing dependent on the number of passengers and service requirements.
Marine transfers remain subject to weather, sea conditions, port procedures and vessel availability. They are therefore not guaranteed substitutes for every flight.
Nevertheless, AirStMaarten expects sea transportation to play an increasingly important role in helping travelers reach St. Barths when air travel options become constrained.
Two Solutions for Two Types of Travelers
AirStMaarten’s approach for the upcoming winter season is to provide clients with two complementary transportation strategies.
For Travelers Who Plan Ahead: AirSXM.com
Private and shared air charter options, advance booking assistance and charter flight credits offering conditional flexibility when plans change.
For Travelers Seeking Alternatives: SeaSXM.com
Private speedboat transfers for clients who cannot obtain a suitable flight, are booking close to departure or prefer traveling by sea.
The Cheapest Option Is Not Always the Best Option
Returning to the two university students hoping to spend New Year’s in St. Barths, their inquiry highlights another important consideration.
Finding the lowest advertised fare is only one part of planning a successful journey.
Travelers must also consider baggage allowances, airport transfers, immigration and customs procedures, international flight connections, arrival times, cancellation conditions and the availability of onward transportation.
A seemingly inexpensive flight may prove impractical if it arrives too late to connect with the final flight to St. Barths.
Similarly, a last-minute private charter may become considerably more expensive when demand is high and availability is limited.
For budget-conscious travelers, scheduled commercial services and shared charter seats should generally be investigated first. Private charters and private speedboats offer additional flexibility but come at a different price point.
AirStMaarten encourages travelers to consider the entire journey rather than evaluating each individual transportation segment in isolation.
St. Barths Travel Requires a New Mindset
The introduction of more structured airport scheduling is unlikely to reduce St. Barths’ popularity.
If anything, the island’s continued appeal to luxury travelers, villa guests, yacht owners and holiday visitors means demand for convenient transportation is likely to remain strong.
What is changing is the importance of advance planning.
AirStMaarten believes travelers, villa rental agencies, travel advisors, private jet brokers and concierge companies should begin treating their St. Barths transportation arrangements as an essential part of their travel planning rather than something to organize after everything else has been confirmed.
The company’s advice for the 2026/2027 winter season is simple:
If you want to fly, book early with AirSXM.com. If suitable flight arrangements are unavailable, explore the alternatives by sea with SeaSXM.com.
Because getting to St. Barths should be part of the enjoyment of visiting the island, not the most stressful part of the journey.
And when Plan A does not work out, having a Plan B can make all the difference.
