PHILIPSBURG — It was a combination of the uses of colors with huge doses of creativity that enabled the Survivors Productions who paraded under the theme ‘Simply Survivors’ to capture the awards for best troupe and best individual piece when the curtains went down on the 2018 Junior Carnival parade yesterday. Ironically, the Survivors were not only the best troupe, they were also the biggest, with a 135 participants divided into two sections. The SXM Zulu Tribe face painting done by Rassheb Illis added the midas touch to the elaborate outfits they wore and the choreography was on point. Janice…
By Hilbert Haar It’s that time of the year again. Carnival. Come and enjoy life. But don’t forget your earplugs. The Collective Prevention Services (CPS) are on to it. Last week the department sent out a press release “urging the population to be aware that loud music can cause hearing damage.” That’s an open door if there ever was one. We all know that loud music is bad for your ears, the way we know that smoking kills and that eating fast food all your life usually leads to lots of health troubles and in some occasions to an early…
By Hilbert Haar The timeshare-industry is important for St. Maarten because timeshare owners spend a lot of time on the island and – more importantly – they are spending a lot of money here. These people love our island, otherwise they would not come to our shores year after year and – in many cases – decade after decade.
The Constitution stipulates that the term of the Parliament is 4 years, however article 59 also provides that the Council of Ministers (the Cabinet) can make use of its right of dissolution and dissolve the Parliament before the end of the 4-year term. The Cabinet’s right to dissolve the Parliament is considered by some scholars as the counterbalance to the no-confidence rule; it is seen as an instrument for the Cabinet to discourage the Parliament from abusing its right to pass a vote of no-confidence against the Cabinet. The Trias Politica encourages separation of powers and responsibilities among the three…

PHILIPSBURG — “I would never wish the level of embarrassment and heartache I went through last night on my worst enemy! What happened and how it happened was very unfortunate, but hey, c’est la vie.” Rumari V. Rogers was quoted as saying the morning after the competition. Rogers, stage name King Rumer, was looking to capture the coveted title for the 4th straight year with his song entitled ‘One Last Jam’ when he was challenged for the crown by nine other participants. The stage performances by King Rumer and King James were commendable, the back up performers were all on…
by Chris Morvan I don’t know where the mosquito stands on the conservationists’ list of protected species, but I would hope it’s very near the bottom. Do they do any good to anybody or anything? Seriously, if they don’t, why hasn’t mankind already wiped them out? They spread deadly diseases. And when they’re not doing that, they’re getting some practice in, biting us because they’ve got nothing better to do.
