MARIGOT – The deteriorating situation in Venezuela started having its effect already in 2016 on the French side of the island. According to data released by the prefecture, there were 345 requests for asylum in 2016, 300 more than in 2015. More than 78 percent of these requests – 270 – were asylum seekers from Venezuela. The prefecture estimates the number of foreigners living in Saint Martin at around 14,000; that’s roughly 40 percent of the population. Last Saturday morning, looking in my book case for a legal hand book in connection with a complicated case I was working on, I saw this book by the cardiologist Pim van Bommel “Eindeloos Bewustzijn” (Dutch for “Infinite Consciousness”) wickedly smiling at me. CUL-DE-SAC — At around 6:30am this morning, just before the sun rose over the Cul de Sac basin, a blazing fire was captured on camera by a Saunders’ resident. The blazing fire was in the Emilio Wilson Park and a huge billow of smoke was emanating from this fire. The police responded quickly and the fire department immediately arrived on the scene. Cul-de-Sac — What began as an experiment back in the 14th century has since been incorporated into huge festivities like carnival. Case in point is the balloon parade that took place yesterday afternoon which started at Carrefour and concluded at the Festival Village. Cayhill — During the month of March, the St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) installed three new 3D-ultrasounds for the Radiology, Gynecology and Cardiology departments respectively. The arrival of the innovative ultrasounds was met with enthusiasm as they that will better assist the specialist with diagnosis and treatment. The 3D-ultrasounds were delivered and installed by MED-X International. In addition, MED-X sales specialist Richard Soutar and an accompanying registered Nurse trained the SMMC specialist on the most optimal use of the machines.
