Dear Editor, This week the Nature Foundation announced that due to the landfill on Pond Island which has been burning for over a month, the non-governmental organization (NGO) has called on nearby communities to start wearing facemasks in order to protect themselves from the fumes. The NGO on Thursday distributed masks to students and staff of a school on the Pondfill which is located near the landfill. Cay Hill — The Sint Maarten Consumer Coalition was invited by management of the Sint Maarten Medical Center to give background and explanations for the tariff increase announced by SMMC as per January 1st. The Consumer Coalition in their press release expressed concern about the consequences of the 41.8% tariff increase and its effect on the insured at SZV and the private insurance companies, as well as the taxpayers from Sint Maarten. Cul-de-Sac — The St. Maarten Tzu Chi Foundation continued its long-standing New Year’s Day tradition on January 1, when a number of cheerful volunteers visited the St. Martin’s Home in St. John’s Estate to treat and entertain seniors on the first day of 2018. In the spirit of giving and sharing, volunteers distributed 76 packages and 150 eggless Ponche Kuba cupcakes to seniors and St. Martin’s Home staffers. Pond Island – On Monday, January 8th, Endorsement Day, four parties were required to garner 142 signatures in order to have their political party registered for the upcoming February 26th elections. The final count indicated that the SDM obtained 194 signatures, SMCP 189 signatures, P.P.A. 86 signatures and the United Democrats 268 signatures. Philipsburg — On Monday January 8th at around 2.30pm, the police central dispatch received a call that an armed robbery had taken place at the office of Leonard Enterprises located in Madame Estate. Information received is that two robbers, one of which was carrying a firearm stormed the establishment and stole a phone and an undisclosed sum of money. They then sped away in a small car, but the color and number plate are not known at this point.
