PHILIPSBURG – The Council of Ministers agreed on Tuesday to make money available to cover the salaries of the post office employees for November and December, Minister of General Affairs Rafael Boasman said on Wednesday. The post office is unable to pay this month’s salaries. On Monday disgruntled postal services employees marched to the government administration building demanding a solution.

Boasman received a delegation, consisting of manager Antonia Wilson, chairman of the board Stuart Johnson and the president of the St. Maarten Communication Union, Ludson Evers.

“The Council of Minister approved on Tuesday the injection of money into the company to cover the salaries for November and December,” Boasman said.

The government support for the employees comes down to 162,000 guilders.

The future of Postal services St. Maarten, that came into being in 2011, remains however bleak. “PSS cannot survive in its present form,” Boasman said. “we have however a legal obligation to have a post office.”

Several options are currently under consideration. A high-ranking civil servant traveled on Wednesday to Curacao for consultations, Boasman said without giving specifics about a possible solution.
