100 MEN register for the Man Up Check UP Prostate Cancer drive at KOOYMAN
CAYHILL — The St. Maarten Medical Center, Positive and Elektralyets Foundation eagerly hosted the second registration drive at Kooyman for Prostate Cancer Awareness on Saturday September 21st from 10am to 2pm.
Kooyman is pleased to have been part of second round of prostate cancer registration drives on St. Maarten. A hardware store is typically a man’s domain, therefore we are happy to participate in the Prostate Cancer Registration Drive and offer our male customers, the opportunity and convenience of registering to “Man Up” and “Checked Up “all the while continuing to run their daily errands, said Marketing Officer, Evencia Carty-Seabrookes.
The turnout for this awareness drive was much more than anyone of us could have imagined. We expected a few individuals, but over 100+ men were registered.
As hardware store, we’ve done numerous events for ladies, specifically with our Breast Cancer “Paint it PINK” event with the Elektralyets and Positive Foundation. It never dawned on our team to explore the opportunities for Prostate Cancer Awareness.

Members of the St. Maarten Medical Center along with the Positive and Elektralytes Foundations encouraged men between that ages for 45 – 70 who had never done a PSA test to register during the event. The SMMC has agreed to contribute the expertise to review the results of the PSA, a free consultation and perform a free ultrasound if necessary. However, the PSA test will have to be paid for at the lab or covered by insurance.
This September, The Positive and Elektralytes Foundations would like to get the men in our lives to talk about the prostate specific antigen (PSA) test with their doctor and make an informed decision about the best testing approach. “This September let’s turn awareness into action. Early detection is the key to saving lives through screenings like the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) and the Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) which helps to identify prostate cancer in its earliest stages” concluded Shelly Alphonso and Mercedes “Elektra” van de Waals-Wyatt, Presidents of the two foundations.
On September 22nd, the Christian Faith Ministries International Church in Dutch Quarter hosted a Man UP, Check UP Prostate Cancer Awareness Information session with guest speakers Dr. Ramos of the St. Maarten Medical Center and Dr. Rojas who talked about prostate cancer and erectile dysfunction. The event was free and very well attended. Men received their Man UP Check t-shirt and impromptu wore them at the session. The men who attended this information session got answers to a great deal of questions asked. In audience included men between the ages for 45 – 70 years old, younger men and spouses.
The St. Maarten Medical Center, the Positive and Elektralyets Foundations would like to thank Kooyman for their continued support, Christian Faith Ministries International Church the team of volunteers, nurses and volunteer team from SMMC, and urologists Dr. Ramos and Dr. Rojas for a great team effort.
Screening of the registered men will take place on Saturday September 28th at the St. Maarten Medical Center from 10am to 2pm.
