FAO Partnership Targets Improved Greenhouse Production in Dominica
From our correspondent
Roseau, Dominica – October 27, 2026 — Efforts to advance climate-smart agriculture in Dominica have received further support through a collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). As part of the initiative, 30 participants drawn from farming, greenhouse operations, construction, agricultural extension services and student and youth groups received specialised instruction from FAO Protected Agriculture Specialist Jervis Rowe.
The programme addressed ways to improve greenhouse design and construction, strengthen day-to-day management and select appropriate inputs for better crop performance. Practical assessments were also conducted at greenhouse facilities in Massacre, the Kalinago Territory and La Plaine to identify areas requiring attention, including structural conditions, operational practices and production methods. In addition, consultations with agricultural input suppliers explored suitable tomato and sweet pepper varieties and fertilisers for greenhouse cultivation.
The initiative is intended to help local producers improve the efficiency and output of their greenhouse operations while strengthening the resilience of Dominica’s agricultural sector. Through training, technical assessments and guidance on suitable production inputs, the Ministry and FAO are working to equip farmers and other agricultural stakeholders with practical knowledge to improve yields and support more sustainable farming practices.
