Port Everglades Considers US$1.7 Billion Cruise Infrastructure Investment
From our correspondent
International News – October 30 2026 — Port Everglades in Florida is exploring a potential investment programme valued at US$1.7 billion over the next two decades, aimed at expanding and upgrading its cruise facilities while improving the overall passenger experience. The long-term development strategy was outlined by the port’s Chief Executive Officer and Director, Joseph Morris, during an interview with Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) President Adam Ceserano on the organisation’s Leadership Series.
The proposed improvements include the renovation of existing cruise terminals, reconstruction of an older facility, enhancements to docking and berthing infrastructure, and the installation of upgraded passenger boarding bridges. Additional plans involve expanding parking facilities and improving road networks to accommodate increasing passenger volumes and vessel movements. Morris explained that changing cruise industry patterns, including the expansion of private island destinations and shorter itineraries, are creating greater demand for efficient port operations, particularly as ships make more frequent turnaround calls.
Beyond physical development, Morris identified customer service and industry partnerships as important elements of the port’s competitive strategy. He pointed to Port Everglades’ location near the Caribbean, its operational culture and its commitment to passenger satisfaction as key advantages. Morris also stressed that maintaining relationships with cruise lines and industry stakeholders is essential to sustaining growth, while acknowledging the FCCA’s contribution in bringing industry leaders together to exchange ideas and establish partnerships.
During the discussion, Morris also reflected on his professional journey, including his transition into cruise operations after spending 23 years primarily in the cargo sector. He described his leadership approach as one built on mentorship, curiosity and continuous improvement, encouraging young professionals to remain open to opportunities, ask questions and develop strong professional networks. The FCCA Leadership Series features discussions with senior cruise industry representatives on emerging trends, operational challenges, partnerships and career experiences shaping the global cruise sector.
