PHILIPSBURG – The Court in First Instance sentenced Reinier Chun-Bon Cheung on Wednesday morning to 36 months of imprisonment, with 18 months suspended and 3 years of probation for the possession of a small weapons arsenal and 747 gram of marijuana. The court acquitted Cheung of theft and fencing a car that belonged to real auto and that was found on his property near the family’s Cake House supermarket on the L.B. Scott Road.

PHILIPSBURG — On Wednesday March 21st, 21 students from the Prince Willem Alexander School visited the Police Head Quarters in Philipsburg. At the police station they were greeted by the Community Police Officers/Inspectors Rensley Henson, Helen Romeo and Arcella Leonard. The children who were very enthusiastic asked many question as they were given a grand tour of the police station and an explanation on what the police do on a daily basis. After the tour the student posed for a quick group photo.
PHILIPSBURG — Detectives are presently investigating a shooting incident which took place on Wednesday shortly before 07.00 a.m. in front of Fu Yung Supermarket located on Middle Region road close to Romeo’s drive. The first of several calls came in to the Emergency Dispatch stating that an argument had taken place between two men which escalated into a fight. PHILIPSBURG — The Special Unit robbery is presently investigating an armed robbery which took place on Oyster Pond Road on Tuesday March 20th at approximately 08.00 p.m. According to the couple that was robbed while driving towards Dawn beach they were blocked by a car in which two unknown men were driving. These two men jumped out of their vehicle and approached the victims. The two suspects were armed with guns and threatened to use them. PHILIPSBURG – Financial supervisor Cft has advised Minister of Finance Mike Ferrier to hire external technical assistance to put the government’s financial administration and financial management in order. Cft-chairman Raymond Gradus gives the advice in a letter dated March 14. Stmaartennews.com asked Minister Ferrier via email whether he had followed up on the advice, but up to last night had not received a response.

Reading through reports in Dutch newspapers it seems that the Netherlands is in more need of an Integrity Chamber than the Netherlands. The reality: St. Maarten has such an institution and the Netherlands doesn’t. But the new Minister of Home Affairs Kajsa Ollongren leaves no doubt about it: the criminal world and legitimate society are seriously entwined in many Dutch municipalities.
