PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten — Winair has taken a significant step in strengthening its aviation services with the addition of Southwest Airlines as a new ground handling client at Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM).
The national carrier announced that its ground handling division, Winair Ground Handling (WGH), will provide full operational support for Southwest Airlines starting April 7, 2026. This includes both above-the-wing services, such as passenger check-in and boarding, and below-the-wing services, including ramp handling and aircraft turnaround.
Boost for Connectivity and Tourism
Southwest Airlines is set to launch nine weekly flights to St. Maarten, connecting the island directly with key U.S. markets, including Orlando and Baltimore.
This development is expected to significantly enhance airlift capacity and improve accessibility to the destination, providing a welcome boost to the tourism sector and local economy.
Strategic Milestone for Winair
For Winair, the agreement represents more than just a new client. It marks a continued expansion of its service portfolio beyond regional passenger operations into a broader aviation services role.
The airline emphasized that being selected by a major U.S. carrier underscores the reliability and professionalism of its ground handling team. With this addition, Winair continues to grow its presence at SXM, supporting multiple international carriers and reinforcing its position as a key aviation service provider in the Caribbean.
Strengthening SXM’s Role as a Regional Hub
The partnership also highlights the strategic importance of Princess Juliana International Airport as a regional hub. By facilitating new international routes and partnerships, SXM continues to position itself as a gateway between the Caribbean and North America.
Winair noted its ongoing commitment to operational excellence, efficiency, and high-quality service as it supports the expansion of airline partners operating into St. Maarten.
Outlook
With Southwest Airlines’ entry and Winair’s expanded role in ground handling, the collaboration signals continued growth in St. Maarten’s aviation sector, improved connectivity, and increased opportunities for tourism-driven economic activity.
