Roseau, Dominica – November 03 2026 — United Workers Party (UWP) Political Leader and economist Dr. Thomson Fontaine used his Independence Day message on November 3, 2026, to urge Dominicans to reflect on whether the country’s independence has translated into meaningful improvements in their lives. Extending greetings to citizens both locally and overseas, Fontaine said the anniversary should serve as a moment to assess how far the nation has come and consider the priorities that must guide its next stage of development.
Looking back at Dominica’s attainment of independence in 1978, Fontaine acknowledged the determination and sacrifices of the individuals who helped the country achieve self-government. He singled out the nation’s first Prime Minister, Patrick Roland John, and other contributors to the independence movement, saying their efforts should inspire present and future generations to place the interests of Dominica above personal or political considerations.
Dr. Fontaine maintained that the significance of independence should be judged by the conditions under which people live, rather than by ceremonies and expressions of patriotism alone. He said Dominicans should be able to identify its benefits through better economic prospects, opportunities for young people, adequate support for older citizens and the ability to earn a sustainable livelihood. He also credited the country’s continued development to the daily contributions of workers and professionals in agriculture, fishing, education, healthcare, public service, business and other fields.
On the question of national cohesion, the UWP leader cautioned against allowing political disagreements and differences in belief or background to undermine relationships among citizens. He encouraged Dominicans to cultivate a greater spirit of tolerance and engage in constructive discussions about the country’s future. Fontaine also stressed the need to invest in the younger generation through education, skills development, employment and business opportunities, while ensuring that senior citizens receive appropriate care and recognition. He further called for the diaspora to be more actively engaged in national development, acknowledging the financial, professional and cultural contributions of Dominicans living abroad.
Turning to the UWP’s development agenda, Fontaine pointed to the party’s “10 Pillars to Shared Prosperity,” which he said outlined its approach to building a more inclusive economy. He identified agriculture, tourism, entrepreneurship, investment and human-resource development as areas requiring continued attention, arguing that economic opportunities should extend beyond a select group to reach families and communities throughout the island. He also emphasized the need to protect Dominica’s forests, rivers, fertile lands and marine resources, insisting that economic growth should not come at the expense of environmental preservation and climate resilience.
Fontaine said the country’s democratic progress also depended on public institutions operating with transparency, accountability and integrity. He called on citizens to demand high standards from those entrusted with public responsibilities and encouraged greater involvement in community development. He also acknowledged the contributions of public servants, police officers, firefighters, healthcare workers, private-sector employees, community organizations, faith-based groups and volunteers, while offering congratulations to the recipients of the 2026 national awards.
In closing, Fontaine urged Dominicans to recognize that building the country was a collective responsibility that extended beyond political leadership and party affiliation. He called for renewed efforts to strengthen national institutions, widen access to opportunities and create a society in which social justice and economic benefits were shared more equitably. He ended his address by invoking God’s blessings on Dominica and all its citizens, both at home and throughout the diaspora.
