GREAT BAY — Sint Maarten (DCOMM) — The Department of Statistics (STAT) from the Ministry of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Traffic & Telecommunications, embarked upon an Economic Census Survey (ECS) approximately six weeks ago and has received information to date from over 1400 entities. The Department of STAT is very pleased with the cooperation of the business community so far and looks forward to completing the full census in order to have a good baseline of statistics. GREAT BAY — Sint Maarten (DCOMM) — The Fire Department which falls under the Ministry of General Affairs, is calling on the community to be very conscious by not throwing out lighted cigarettes or matches that could result in bush fires due to the dry spell that the island is currently experiencing. Persons, who would like to burn bush or garbage in a built-up area, or on a hillside for agricultural activities, are requested to refrain from doing so, and contact the Fire Department for advice. Congratulations are also extended to Tefari Prevoo Francisco, an eleven-year-old student from the Sister Regina School who is the on-Island finalist in the junior division of the competition. ORANJESTAD — Stakeholders on St. Eustatius held the last Juvenile Cases Conference (Jeugd Casus Overleg – JCO), for the 2017-2018 school year on Thursday, June 14th, 2018. The JCO is a monthly integral discussion between representatives of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Court of Guardianship, Police Department, Truancy Department and the Gwendolyn van Putten School. In the JCO, minors guilty of criminal offenses are discussed. Skipping school is also considered an offense. The stakeholders jointly decide which forms of interventions are ideal per child. Officials of the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) visited St. Maarten last week during June 5 – 7 to undertake a scoping mission, with a view to assisting St. Maarten in its planning to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. On June 12th, Algemeen Pensioenfonds Sint Maarten (APS) Director Nadya Croes-van Putten welcomed Minister of Finance, Michael Ferrier to the APS office for an official visit and tour.
