PHILIPSBURG — Hurricane Irma has left our island in a critical state. The education infrastructure serves as one of the most important pillars in our society, and has suffered tremendously. In addition, we can also conclude that our (in) tangible cultural heritage and sport facilities are also critically damaged. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport has received many heartfelt messages as well as pledges from International, Caribbean and Kingdom counterparts, to assist in the restoration of St. Maarten’s educational structure. The Ministry ECYS has already received assistance from the Urban Search and Rescue Team (USAR), which assists in…

PHILIPSBURG — Readers, subscribers, advertisers and regular visitors to the TODAY Newspaper offices will have seen by now that the office building has been ravaged by Hurricane Irma, leaving half of the building roofless. Exactly above the main section of the newspaper offices where the daily operations took place. Computers and plate printers have been totally drenched in the salty rainwater Irma dumped on the island. We strongly doubt these will be usable after this. Surprisingly, the offices were not looted. So management was able to salvage vital administration and other important documents from the offices and secure these safely…
By Hilbert Haar MONT VERNON – On Wednesday, September 20, at 12.15 p.m. the power came back at our condo in Mont Vernon, just fifteen days after Hurricane Irma devastated the island. This report chronicles my personal experiences at Residence Mont Vernon – located at the top of Orient Bay on the French side – during and after Hurricane Irma. It contains…

The same on the Dutch side where help came from Aruba and Curacao, from Nijmegen and Friesland, and of course from many other places too. We’ve never seen so many damaged cars and shattered windshields in our life. And of course, we heard the stories about senseless looting – who needs a flatscreen TV when there is no electricity? – but we also heard Glen Carty…
