GREAT BAY — Minister of Tourism & Economic Affairs Mellissa Arrindell-Doncher on Monday explained that a decision about when residents abroad can return to the island will be made sometime after the passing of Hurricane Maria. The Minister assured those abroad that every effort will be made to get them home sooner rather than later. In fact, she said, those efforts were already underway before Hurricane Maria formed and quickly became a threat. SXM AIRPORT — Over 300,000 (Three Hundred thousand) pounds of hurricane relief supplies were secured and delivered by Ministry TEATT Team Relief SXM in the days following Hurricane Irma. The team, which consisted of several volunteers, was quickly formed once commercial airlines was cleared by Minister of Tourism Mellissa Arrindell-Doncher to fly into St. Maarten to perform humanitarian airlift. SXM AIRPORT — Airlines suspending service to a destination after a natural disaster is expected, especially when the hotel inventory of the destination is very low, says Head of the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau Rolando Brison. Considering the level of destruction to St. Maarten’s hotel properties, the airport and overall infrastructure, Brison said, airlines will always consider the level of their service. PHILIPSBURG — Minister Responsible for Economic Affairs Mellissa Arrindell-Doncher has dispatched the controllers of the Economic Control Department to conduct rigorous controls of supermarkets and businesses that sell hurricane items. After reports of exorbitant prices, the Minister had already warned last week that any business caught price gouging will be severely fined.
