Philipsburg — We found the following unpaid advice to political parties on Facebook. Good advice that we felt compelled to share with our readership as Postulation Day approaches on Monday, November 13th, 2017. The unpaid advice to political parties goes as follows: As all parties get ready for postulation day, let’s reflect on the political turmoil since 10-10-10. 7 governments in 7 years, but let’s analyze the situation a bit deeper. Every time government fell over the past years, the main actor or actors were always young, relatively new to politics, a relative newcomer to the party from which they…

Fellow St. Martiners, This St. Martin Day is like no other that we have celebrated since this holiday was established jointly by two St. Martin patriots in 1959, the late Dr. Hubert Petit and Dr. Claude Wathey. Their intention, as I understand it, was to bring all the people of the island together, from Great Bay to Marigot, from Middle Region to Hameau du Pont, from French Quarter to Dutch Quarter, and from Simpson Bay to Galisbay, St. Martin people from all four corners of the island, to join hands and hearts together to celebrate our St. Martin-ness, that special…

PHILIPSBURG / HILVERSUM – “The troubled political situation mid the destructions done by hurricane Irma, make the presence of independent media on St. Maarten more important than ever.” This is the opinion of the organization behind the Dutch benefit event ‘Nieuwspoort for St. Maarten’. Thursday several prominent Dutch politicians and journalist gathered during the benefit event in The Hague to talk about aid or the media on the island. One editorial newspaper office was completely destroyed by hurricane Irma, while the remaining – and only –  newspaper on St. Maarten is struggling with a huge drop in advertising revenues. Other media also…

PHILIPSBURG — Prime Minister William Marlin said that the first thing he did on Friday morning was call State Secretary of Kingdom Relations, Mr. Knops after receiving news that the Dutch government had taken a decision on the Recovery Fund and on the amount of 550 million Euros in recovery aid to Sint Maarten. This is great news, he said, and he expressed a big Thank You to the government and people of the Netherlands for the relief aid received so far, amounting to over 50 million Euros and now the decision to establish the Recovery Fund with no less…

The controversial flagpole project VROMI-Minister Christophe Emmanuel initiated on the Bell property just behind the Harold Jack Hill came a step closer to reality on Friday when a crew erected the massive flagpole. It looks like the St. Maarten flag will be hoisted at this location in time for St. Maarten Day. Remarkably, the truck at the top of the hill has a French license plate. Photo Hilbert Haar

By Cdr. Bud Slabbaert The hyperglossy travel life-style magazine “Exotic Escapades” announced that the beach of St.Tosia’s Banana Bay has been selected as one of world’s top ten best beaches. This “gem of the island” as the magazine calls it, extends for a mile stretch of luscious, soft and white coral sand and is framed by lush, green hills with softly swaying palm trees rising up behind the beach and capping off the splendid setting. Reefs protect the beach, making it ideal for swimming. It is called Banana Bay because it has the shape of a Banana and for that…

PHILIPSBURG — With keen interest SHTA has followed the recent political shifts and the debate in the Parliament of St. Maarten.   The dismissal of the Marlin Cabinet and the subsequent call for snap elections will most definitely further hinder our recovery; taking precious resources and energy away from critical decision making and action. The additional and prolonged hardships inflicted on the residents (both individuals and businesses) of St. Maarten are significant and could have been prevented.  At the time of these events, valuable time had already been wasted and the in-action had already caused untold damage to our Tourism Product…

Dear Editor, In Tuesday’s edition of The Daily Herald, member of the Second Chamber, Mr. Van Raak paid for a full page ad, which he claimed was his effort to promote “Free Press”. Strangely enough as long as I’ve lived here I never heard of attacks on the freedom of the press, but again as with everything else, if the Dutch perceive something that makes it factual. The cartoon or caricature used is nothing short of a pure sick and racist attempt at sick humor to display their contention that might makes right. The drawing shows in clear terms a…

SXM Airport — Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Traffic and Telecommunication (TEATT) Mellissa Arrindell-Doncher “broke ground” on Friday for the construction of the new Fixed Based Operator (FBO) facility at the Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA). The project (a private jet terminal) should take about 18 months to complete and will give St. Maarten a world class facility to effectively handle and enhance the private air travel business that is vital to the airport and by extension St. Maarten. Calling the moment a “momentous occasion for St. Maarten and for SXM Airport”, the Minister said “though we are currently not…
