GREAT BAY – The Progress Committee is not entirely “cautiously optimistic” in its first quarter report as Justice Minister Rafael Boasman said at Wednesday’s Council of Ministers press briefing. This appears from the report of which this newspaper obtained a copy. “After many months of insisting in vain for action with the government of St. Maarten the movements of the past quarter seems reason to be cautiously optimistic or, if you want, less pessimistic,” the report states about government decisions. The report indeed mentions that the prime minister expressed his support to the Progress Committee for the measures the minister…
The Progress Committee is a tad more critical of St. Maarten than Justice Minister Rafael Boasman wants us to believe. The report calls the government a bad employer and notes that the country has no access to Actpol – a critical tool for immigration and police work. Maybe it is a good sign that the Progress Committee is “less pessimistic” – one could call that a form of optimism of course. But St. Maarten is not there yet, not by a long shot. The good news is that our minister of justice is well aware of this.
AIRPORT — SXM Airport was on lockdown this afternoon around 3pm after a bombthreat notice came in to police authorities regarding a Jetblue flight B6 77 out of Boston that was scheduled to land at 11:13am this morning and only landed in St. Maarten at 3:07pm. Instead of the scheduled departure time of 7:05am, the aircraft, an Airbus A321, departed Logan International Airport at 11:12am with a four delay. The aircraft was parked on the SXM Airport runway as authorities executed searches and looked into getting the passengers safely off of the aircraft and into a safe holding area where…

~ Serenity Estates disturbs the peace in Defiance ~ GREAT BAY – Real estate developer Smart Homes is causing a major headache to pensioner Fernett Payne who has been living peacefully on a property on Defiance Road since 1986. When the developer bought the adjacent plot of land for $470,000 on September 20 of last year, it did not take long before trouble started. The development of what has been loftily dubbed Serenity Estates had disturbed the peace on this quiet location in Defiance. Payne, a 67-year-old pensioner who came to the island from Antigua in 1971, says that activities…
GREAT BAY – On Wednesday afternoon, May 4th, 2017, the Chief Prosecutor Ton Maan hosted a launching event at the Rhythm and Blues venue across from the Puerta del Sol mall in Cole Bay. The Minister of Justice, Mr. Rafael Boasman, was present and gave a speech addressing all government representatives invited for this special meeting regarding the launching of the project “Asset Recovery Team Sint Maarten”, colloquially known in Dutch as the ‘Afpakteam’ or as the ‘Pluk-me-kaal team’. At a later time in the day, it was made known that the press was also invited to witness this launch…
When you hear the name Asset Recovery Team, you can’t help but be happy. Sounds like a good thing, right? You would think that if your nice expensive car ever gets stolen, the Asset Recovery Team will be the unit to quickly recover and return your car to you. But like we say here in St. Maarten, nothing ‘t’all go so! The Asset Recovery Team Sint Maarten, or ART SXM as the Prosecutor’s Office press release so nicely describes it, has a more sinister objective. The ART is the one to take your car away from you if you cannot…
Mixing drugs with Carnival When you combine alcohol and drugs with dehydration and excessive physical exertion like that of jumping up in a parade like Jouvert, you put a tremendous toll on your body that can even have fatal results. What people tend to over-estimate is their physical ability for endurance. Your body can only take so much. Especially young people suffer from the mindset of thinking they can take anything. The final report is not in yet, so we are still speculating as to what exactly happened to Rachelle Thomas but all indications point to the fact that mixing…
