In connection to the ongoing Maximus investigation, suspect R.A.d.S. of Curaçao was arrested this morning, November 18th, 2019, on Sint Maarten. The Public Prosecution Service had filed a request with the supervisory judge on Curaçao to have the suspect detained. The supervisory judge had determined from the investigation, thus far, that there was sufficient evidence for the arrest. R.A.d.S. will be held 8 days in pre-trial detention and will be heard today by the supervisory judge on Sint Maarten. Since 2014, a new coral disease has been spreading through the reefs of the Caribbean. Known as Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD), this disease appears to be fast-spreading and extremely lethal to the corals that are susceptible to it. In August a meeting was organized by MPA Connect where experts met to discuss lessons learned from Florida’s management of this disease and discuss best practices for identifying and treating infected corals for the future. PHILIPSBURG – The National Recovery Program Bureau (NRPB) has launched a tender for the salvaging, decommissioning and disposing of around 80 shipwrecks in the Simpson Bay Lagoon and Mullet Pond. In addition, the NRPB is procuring services to supervise the clean-up activities, which also includes the removal of shoreline and shallow water debris.
