With deep sorrow and profound gratitude, we remember the life of Robert Dubourcq, a true pioneer of tourism and community development in St. Maarten.
Robert was among the first hoteliers to shape the island’s hospitality industry in the 1970s, leading both Little Bay and Great Bay Resorts. Through his vision, dedication, and leadership, he helped transform St. Maarten into one of the Caribbean’s most sought-after destinations.
As a founder and longtime leader of the Sint Maarten Hotel Association—later the Sint Maarten Hospitality & Trade Association (SHTA)—Robert dedicated over four decades to strengthening tourism and trade. Under his guidance, the association expanded into a multi-sector organization, promoting growth and professionalism across the island. In 2000, he launched the innovative “Dollar a Day” program, ensuring that visitors could contribute directly to education and community initiatives.
Robert’s outstanding contributions were recognized with the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association Hotelier of the Year Award (2004) and the SHTA Lifetime Achievement Award (2012). Yet his impact went far beyond the tourism industry. As a Paul Harris Fellow Rotarian, he was known for his selfless aid to individuals and his tireless commitment to the community he loved.
Even after retiring as SHTA’s Executive Director in 2013, Robert remained a beloved supporter and mentor to colleagues, friends, and the broader St. Maarten family. His dedication, kindness, and generosity will be remembered always.
Our hearts are with Robert’s family, friends, and the entire community that mourns his passing. His legacy of leadership, service, and love for St. Maarten will continue to inspire for generations to come.
“May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his vision live on in the island he helped to build.”
