Samuel Wasman Hazel — affectionately known as Sam Hazel — was a beloved politician, businessman, and community figure in Sint Maarten. He passed away on April 13, 2018.
During his life, Sam Hazel served the people of Sint Maarten with distinction:
- He held office as an Island Council Member for 16 years (1971–1987).
- He was also Commissioner for 14 years (1971–1985).
- He acted as Lieutenant Governor for several years (1972–1977).
- Beyond politics, he was a shareholder and managing director of the Seaview Hotel, and he managed the property for decades beginning in 1959.
- He was known for his passion for sports — particularly cricket, baseball, and dominos.
Sam was born to Melford Augustus Hazel and Ann Louisa Hazel.
He devoted himself to his family, his business, and his country — earning respect across the island.
